Why Modern Life Disrupts Our Natural Rhythms
Why so many women feel disconnected from their natural cycles — and how to come back into safety and harmony…
In modern life many women feel subtly out of rhythm – with their bodies, their energy, and the natural cycles that once guided daily life.
Have you ever had the sense that something feels “off” within you… but you can’t quite explain what it is?
You’re doing all the things you should be doing. You’re keeping up. You’re managing. You’re showing up for life. And yet underneath it all there is a quiet feeling of disconnection — from your body, your emotions, your energy, and even from yourself.
This is something I see often in the women I work with.
And more often than not, it is not because they are doing anything “wrong”.
It is because they are living out of rhythm.
In our modern lives, we have slowly drifted away from the natural cycles that our bodies, minds, and nervous systems were designed to live in harmony with. We have lost connection with the rhythms of the seasons, the rhythms of rest and activity, the rhythms of nourishment and digestion, and even the rhythms of our own inner emotional and energetic landscape.
We have become very good at output… and very unfamiliar with recovery.
Very good at pushing through… and disconnected from listening within.
Very good at living by the clock… and no longer living by our natural cycles.
And the body notices.
The nervous system notices.
The subtle layers of who we are notice.
We are cyclical beings
As women, we are deeply cyclical by nature.
We are influenced by the lunar cycle, the seasons, our hormones, our energy levels, and our emotional landscape. Ayurveda, yogic philosophy, and many traditional systems of healing all recognise that humans are not designed to operate in a constant, linear way.
We are designed to ebb and flow.
To expand and contract.
To move and to rest.
To be active and to be inward.
Yet the world we live in asks us to be the same every day. To maintain a steady output regardless of how we feel, what season we are in, or what our body is asking for.
Over time, this creates a quiet internal conflict.
The body begins to live in a state of low-level alertness. The nervous system no longer feels safe enough to soften. We lose the ability to recognise when we are tired, when we are overwhelmed, when we need nourishment, or when we need stillness.
We begin to override our natural signals.
And this is where many women start to feel “off”, anxious, depleted, irritable, foggy, or emotionally disconnected — without knowing why.
How Living Out of Rhythm Affects the Nervous System
One of the most profound realisations I have had through my work with women is how deeply this loss of rhythm impacts the nervous system.
When we are not living in alignment with natural cycles, the nervous system rarely has the opportunity to drop into true safety and restoration.
We eat on the go.
We move quickly from one task to the next.
We rarely pause between activities.
We are surrounded by constant stimulation.
There is no natural punctuation to the day.
No gentle returning to stillness.
No acknowledgement of seasonal shifts that call us to slow down or lighten up.
In the workshops and retreats I have been facilitating recently — around winter and spring wellbeing, seasonal awareness, and nervous system regulation — this has been a common thread. Women are often surprised at how profoundly their body responds to simple practices that restore rhythm:
Eating slowly and mindfully.
Pausing between activities.
Working with breath and gentle movement.
Using aromatherapy to soothe the senses.
Creating quiet, intentional space.
These practices are not complicated. They are deeply familiar to the body.
Because they bring us back into something we have always known.
The loss of seasonal awareness
Winter, in particular, highlights this disconnection.
Winter is naturally a time for slowing down, conserving energy, reflecting, and restoring. Yet many of us continue to operate as though it were summer — full speed, full output, full schedules.
The body, however, is wired differently.
In winter, digestion slows, energy turns inward, and the nervous system seeks more rest and warmth. When we ignore this and push forward regardless, we create internal strain.
The same happens as we move into spring. The body begins to feel the stirring of new energy, but if we are exhausted from winter, we cannot meet that transition with vitality.
Returning to Balance Through Seasonal Awareness
Living seasonally is not about following rules or rigid routines. It is about remembering that we are part of nature — not separate from it.
And when we honour the season, we honour ourselves.
Returning to rhythm begins simply
Coming back into rhythm does not require dramatic change. It begins with small, conscious acts that gently remind the body that it is safe to soften.
This is something I weave into all of my work — whether through Ayurveda, yoga, aromatherapy, somatic awareness, or coaching.
Rhythm returns through:
Conscious eating and mindful nourishment.
Creating pauses in the day.
Working with the breath.
Clearing energy from our environment.
Using aromatic rituals to soothe the nervous system.
Spending time in stillness.
Listening to the body’s signals again.
These are simple practices, but they have profound effects because they restore what has been missing: a sense of safety and flow.
When the nervous system begins to feel safe, the body starts to regulate naturally. Energy improves. Emotions settle. Sleep deepens. Clarity returns.
Not because we have forced anything — but because we have stopped working against our natural design.
Harmony between inner and outer life
Recently, as I have been preparing my new living and work space, I have been very aware of how closely our outer environment mirrors our inner state.
Clearing physical space.
Clearing energetic residue.
Creating calm, intentional surroundings.
This is not just about aesthetics. It is about creating environments that support the nervous system and encourage harmony.
It also feels naturally aligned with the energy of the season – to “spring clean”, declutter and release stagnation that has built up over the previous season.
Our homes, like our bodies, need rhythm too.
And when both are tended with care, we begin to feel more like ourselves again.
This is the foundation of my work with other women
When women come to me feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or disconnected, we rarely begin with complicated techniques.
We begin by restoring rhythm.
By bringing the body back into safety.
By reintroducing gentle awareness of seasons, nourishment, breath, aroma, and space.
Because from this place, everything else becomes easier.
Healing becomes less about effort and more about remembering.
Remembering how to listen.
Remembering how to soften.
Remembering how to live in harmony with our natural cycles.
A gentle invitation
If you have been feeling that quiet sense of disconnection… if you feel like you are constantly pushing through… if you feel out of sync with yourself and don’t know why…
It may not be that you need to do more.
It may be that you need to return to rhythm.
To create space for pauses.
To live a little more seasonally.
To allow your nervous system to feel safe enough to rest.
Sometimes the most powerful shifts come not from doing more, but from returning to the quiet intelligence that already exists within the body.
This is a journey I am deeply passionate about guiding women through — gently, holistically, and in a way that honours the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.
Because when we return to rhythm, we return to ourselves.
Simple Ways to Begin Returning to Rhythm
- Start the morning with natural light, rather than screens.
- If you can, watch the sunrise, while consciously bringing into your awareness all that you are grateful for.
- Eat meals slowly and with awareness.
- Eat meals regularly and at the same times each day.
- Step outside for a walk during daylight hours.
- Honour rest when the body asks for it.
- Begin noticing the subtle rhythms of your energy. Regularly check-in with yourself through out the day.
